As you can see from the picture, I have drawn the panel
lines both at the midpoint and at the gutter point.
I like to have a little room to move things around if I
want to, so when I draw the comic I actually draw it to
the midpoint, not just to the edge of the gutter.
That way if I want to shift the entire panel a little bit
in any direction, I have line work drawn to accommodate it.
I also know that when I draw the actual panel borders with
the computer, it won't match exactly with my hand-drawn
lines, so I need a little "fudge" room.
The very first thing I put on the page after the
panel lines is the text.
As you can see, it's pretty sloppy. I don't worry
about neatness with the text, because it's just there at
this stage to show me roughly how much space it will take
up so that I won't fill in too much of my space with
important artwork and have to squeeze in the text
later. The text is one of the most important aspects
of a comic, so it gets equal consideration as the art.
In this stage, I only draw the foreground artwork.
In the case of panel 2, the foreground and background are
integrated, so I went ahead and drew most of the
background as well.
