| The first thing I
do, before drawing a single thing on the paper, is plan
out my panels. For The Many Moons of Astra, that is
a pretty easy task because I have stuck to a uniform panel
structure since the beginning of the comic. For now,
I use a single page of standard 8.5 x 11 inch cheap
printer paper for each comic update. This may change
in the future, as I am looking to eliminate paper from my
process by use of a graphics tablet.
Anyway, I have marked a paper
with the midpoints of both the length and height of the paper,
as well as the 1/3 points for height. This allows
me to easily create each of the panel structures I use for
the comic. I then have marked points 2.5 millimeters
to each side of these points, indicating the gutter, or
space between each panel. The end result looks like
this:

I then draw pencil lines
between whichever marks represent the panel structure I
wish to use for the update I am working on. You'll
be able to see that in the next step...
