MERRY
MEET!
Another month is here as the Wheel of the
Year turns, Mabon disappears into our past, and Samhain quickly
approaches. The weather in Idaho changed quickly and drastically.
The day before Mabon, was hot, sunny, and full of summer. Once Mabon hit,
however, we've had nothing but rain; a nice change in this desert climate.
Glen and I have been super busy with our preparations for Samhain, our favorite
Sabbat. To lighten our load a bit, we've hired an intern who has been
surveying our forums
members and enabling us to understand our customers needs and what you want from
Goldentree Wands. Thanks Kyna! As this newsletter is seeing
production on October 3, please note that it is too late to order any custom
items on time for Samhain. We'd like to extend the invitation however, to
start thinking about Yule and all the fun gifts you'd like to buy
for...yourself.

SAMHAIN~
Samhain,
October 31st, has many special meanings associated with this date. It
marks the last harvest of the year; the day when the veil between worlds is
thinnest; and to some, the Wiccan New Year. Whatever this date means to
you, it is a day of joy, reverence, and a look into the more mysterious side of
life. This Samhain, in particular, will be very special for Glen and
I. We have lost someone dear and close to our hearts, so we'll be inviting
him to join us for a "dumb supper." We'll prepare a meal for him
that we served when he came to visit us, one spring day in 2004. Our table
will be set for three, instead of two, and we'll serve him up the biggest
helping of food. Glen and I will sit there in silence, and enjoy the
presence of our friend as he joins us for a supper on our favorite night.
A "dumb supper" is an opportunity to talk with your loved ones who are
deceased, share your thoughts with them, and listen to what they might have to
say in return. This is a ritual that is not to be taken lightly, so, while
we highly recommend a dumb supper on this special night, we also want to add
that if you do not feel comfortable, perhaps you should save this ritual for
another Samhain. Above all, enjoy the night of the year when the veil is
thinnest, and light a candle for the entities who might wish to give you a
visit.
Peace
be with you, Landon.

Maple is a fascinating and beautiful wood due largely to the great deal
of variation in its appearance. Some maple wood is without any
interesting grain, while some has an amazing wavy (called
"curly") appearance with remarkable translucence. And
some maple is known as "Bird's Eye" maple because it has tiny
little spots in the grain, like miniature knotholes, throughout the
wood. And still other maple is "spalted," or crossed
with very dark lines within the grain. It is sometimes hard to
tell that all of these woods come from the same type of tree.
Maple is one of the most spiritual woods in existence. Because
of this, the primary use of the wood is that of spiritual healing.
It is also amazing when working with moon magick.
Maple is a traveler's wood. Those who are always on the move
and changing will feel right at home with this type of energy. It
allows a person to focus in on the choices in any situation, eliminating
luck and chance. It enhances intellectual pursuits and learning. |

Other
magical properties: |
Not a stone in the
traditional sense, this substance is actually a fossilized piece of wood
that, eons past, was covered with water. As the water dissolved
the wood, the substance was replaced with minerals from within the
water. So the stone we see today is not actually wood, but a
complex formation of minerals with the shape and energetic properties of
wood and stone combined. This process was a cooperative effort of
all of the elements, so the elemental quality of this "stone"
transcends the sum of all of the separate elements.
Petrified wood, like all
fossils, is used in magic pertaining to longevity. It can be used
to extend the life span, to recall the joys of youth for longer.
It is also extensively used to aid in the exploration of past lives.
Because this substance was once an ancient living tree, "old
souls" (those who have undergone many incarnations) are often
attracted to petrified wood. |

WASSAIL:
From: Sabbats A
Witch's Approach to living the Old Ways by, Edain McCoy
This
recipe is from the Galway region of Ireland
(Makes one large punch bowl)
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup heavy cream
6 baked apples, cut into small pieces
5 egg whites
1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons allspice
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
8 whole cloves
1 quart ale
1 cup cooking sherry
1 cup Irish whiskey
Bring the water and cream to a slow boil and remove from heat. Beat the egg
whites well. Thoroughly mix in all the remaining ingredients except the alcohol.
Allow this mixture to cool slightly- enough so that the heat from it will not
crack your punch bowl. If you have a non-glass container for your wassail, you
can skip the cooling process. Blend in the alcohol just before serving, and be
sure to offer the traditional toast to the old apple tree before drinking.
