HAPPY LUGHNASADH!

MERRY MEET!

It seems like just yesterday that we were putting together the newsletter for Litha.  That Sabbat came and went 10 days ago, on a beautiful summer day in Idaho.  We hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did - ice cream was a must that day.  Lughnasadh is quickly approaching in a mere month and Goldentree Wands is busy preparing for our only festival that we attend during the year.  Goddessfest will be an amazing experience and we hope that those who live in the area, or are actually planning on visiting our gorgeous state at the end of July, might stop by to visit our booth.  We'll have many products to look at, but that's not the best part.  Fyrecreek will be here to offer Reiki by donation, she is an incredible healer and already has people lining up for a session.  Willow will have tarot and witchstone readings by donation- those fill up fast so come early and be prepared to sit around in the shade with the rest of the gang.  Last year's Goddessfest was so relaxing and enjoyable, so again, we invite all who can to come and join us, you don't want to miss this unique experience.  To read more about this delightful weekend, please scroll down to the bottom of our newsletter for dates, times, and locations.

LUGHNASADH~

Lughnasadh (Loo-nahs-ah), which falls on August 1st, is a grain festival, sometimes called the Sabbat of the First Fruits, and honors the Celtic Sun God, Lugh (Loo). In North Africa, the birth of the Egyptian Sun Goddess, Isis is celebrated on this day as well.

The Lughnasadh feast is one of the largest of any of the Sabbats. On this day, you should eat the first fruits of your garden (if you don't have one, a fruit and vegetable stand will work perfectly) mostly focusing on grains. Corn is a perfect addition to this feast. Bake a fresh loaf of bread-might we suggest corn bread- on this day. The rising of the bread as it bakes is symbolic of the pregnancy of harvest this time of year. Then at your ritual, ceremoniously break the bread and share it while proclaiming all that you are thankful for.

To read more and discuss the Lughnasadh Rituals, please visit our forums post: Lughnasadh

WOOD-OF-THE-SABBAT:

Cocobolo

Wood Origin:

South America

Gender Association:

Very strongly Masculine

Planetary Association:

Mercury, Jupiter

Elemental Association:

Fire

Other magical properties:

Cocobolo is the wood of passion.  Within it courses the energy of the flame, burning hot with desire, sexuality, ambition, adventure, even rage.  A purely masculine energy radiates from the wood.

This wood's energy would be a good tool for goal-oriented people.  It will encourage ambition and achievement, and a thirst for knowledge and understanding in whatever the matter is at hand.

Cocobolo boosts intuitive luck, but can lead to rash or hasty decisions.  It's energy is adventurous, and may lead a person into danger or travel far from their level of usual comfort.  This is not always a bad thing.

STONE-OF-THE-SABBAT:

Sunstone

Gender Association:

Masculine

Planetary Association:

Sun

Elemental Association:

Fire

Other magical properties:

Sunstone was first used by the Vikings as a navigation tool on their ocean-going vessels.  The translucent, opalescent flash within the stone will only occur in particular alignment to the sun.  This translucence is very sensitive to light, and is able to be seen even in very poor lighting.  In this way, the Vikings were able to determine the position of the sun even when it was hidden behind thick layers of clouds, since the sun's rays were still reaching the earth in the same direction as they would on a cloudless day.

This anecdote is very illustrative of the powerful energy of the Sunstone.  It is protective, and acts as a guide no matter how unclear a situation may be.  Use this stone in any protective ritual, and you will find the darkness and negativity easily cleared away.  If used in divination, extremely direct and clear results will be obtained.  This stone can also be used for health and healing, and will burn away the negative energies causing illness and mental unrest.  Sunstone is a very potent stone, with virtually limitless uses.

LUGH'S SUMMER CORN BISQUE:

By: K.D. Spitzer (from The Witches Date Book, 2006)

5 ears of corn (4 cups kernels)
1/2 onion, chopped
1 celery rib, chopped
1 bay leaf
12 cup heavy cream

Garnish:
12 scallops
1 tsp. each dried chives and dill

Cut kernels from ears; using dull side of knife, also scrape milk and meat from cob into bowl of corn. Break cobs in half and simmer in 6 cups water with vegetables and bay leaf for 15 minutes. Remove cobs. Reserve 1 cup of kernels; add the rest to the pot with cream and salt to taste. Simmer for 5 minutes; remove bay leaf and puree. Return to pot; add remaining corn and gently reheat. Do not boil. For the garnish, rub scallops with herbs and sauté in hot butter until cooked (1 to 2 minutes). Ladle soup in warmed bowls and garnish each with 3 scallops. Makes 4 servings.

CORNBREAD:

By: Edain McCoy, from her book, Sabbats

3/4 cup flour
3 Teaspoons baking powder
3/4 cup milk
1 Tablespoon Salt
1 1/2 cups yellow corn meal
1 Egg
2 Tablespoons butter, melted

Preheat a greased 9x9 baking pan in a 425 degree F oven for 20-22 minutes. Pour the bread mixture into the hot pan and place it back in the oven for 20 minutes. Serve hot with butter or honey.

ASPEN'S APPLE PIE:

"I feel like eating apple pie!"  Willow said one day, while Aspen was visiting.

"If you want one, why don't we make it?"  She asked.

"I don't know how and I don't have the ingredients."

"Well, do you have apples and sugar?"

"Yes."

"Then we can make an apple pie."

And so, Aspen's Apple Pie was born

Pastry for two-crusts
9 inch pie plate
2/3 to 3/4 cup of half brown and half granulated sugar
2 Tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1 to 2 teaspoons lemon juice
6 to 7 thinly sliced apples (about 2 lbs)
1 Tablespoon butter chopped in small cubes

Preheat oven to 425F
Line the dish with one crust. In a bowl combine all ingredients except butter and mix well.  Pour into the pie crust and add the butter all around the top of the apple mix.  Place the second pie crust on top of the pie and vent with slits, or make a lattice top with the crust.  Bake for 40 to 50 minutes until golden brown.  Serve with ice cream or whipped cream.
