Black mirrors have been the speculum of choice for many
generations of witches. A speculum (by definition, this
word means simply "mirror" and should not be
confused with the medical tool of the same name) is a tool
used to scry. Scrying is to divine by gazing into an object in
which, or by the aid of which, visions appear. Several
forms of scrying exist, including crystal ball gazing or
gazing into a water-filled black vessel. But the black
mirror stands out as a genuine scrying tool used by European
witches from ancient times to the modern day. A convex
scrying mirror is highly regarded as the best and most useful of
the scrying tools.
A black mirror is simply that, a mirror that has been backed
not with a mirror surface but with some sort of black
substance. The scrying mirror does reflect, but not in the
traditional way. One can choose to either look at
aspects of the reflection, or gaze past the reflection deeper
into the scrying mirror.
Our convex scrying mirror measures 9 1/2 inches in diameter,
with a 6 1/2 inch diameter glass surface. The color of
the circular frame around the glass is a rich dark
walnut. Your convex
scrying mirror will come with detailed instructions on how to use
it.
